17-4 PH Stainless Steel Bar (Annealed)

17/4 PH Annealed Stainless Bar is one of the original precipitation hardened grades. 17/4 comes with a blend of corrosion and oxidation resistance with characteristics that include toughness, excellent mechanical properties and high strength at elevated temperatures. Available in condition ‘A’, solution annealed and heat-treated to H1150. Other heat-treated conditions are available on request i.e. H900 and H1020.

17/4 can be easily forged, formed and welded. Applications include pump shafts, bolts, gears, bearings, spindles, turbine parts, valve components and temperature sensor products.

17-4 PH is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel grade developed to deliver a strong balance of high strength, good toughness and good corrosion resistance. 17-4 PH stainless steel bar is commonly supplied in the annealed Condition A (solution treated), and it can then be heat-treated to achieve different strength and hardness levels depending on the requirements of the component.

Overview
Unlike austenitic grades such as 304L or 316L, 17-4 PH is selected primarily for its mechanical performance. It offers excellent strength at elevated temperatures and maintains good oxidation resistance in many service environments. This makes it a popular choice for engineered components where standard stainless grades may not provide the required strength-to-weight performance.

Key benefits

  • High strength and excellent mechanical properties
  • Good corrosion and oxidation resistance for many environments
  • Good toughness and dimensional stability during heat treatment
  • Can be supplied and heat-treated to suit different performance needs

Heat treatment and supply conditions
17-4 PH is commonly available in Condition A (solution annealed). It can also be supplied or processed to heat-treated conditions such as H1150, and other conditions may be available on request, including H900 and H1020. Selecting the correct condition depends on the required strength, hardness and toughness for the end application. If you are unsure which condition is best for your component, our team can help you identify the most suitable option.

Fabrication and machining
17-4 PH can be forged, formed and welded using suitable procedures. Machining performance will depend on the supplied condition and the final heat treatment required. Where the final component requires high strength and wear resistance, heat treatment is typically used to achieve the desired mechanical properties after machining.

Typical applications
17-4 PH stainless steel bar is used for a wide range of high-strength components, including pump shafts, bolts, gears, bearings, spindles, turbine parts, valve components and temperature sensor products.
