316L (EN 1.4404 / AISI 316L) stainless hollow bar is an austenitic stainless steel product used to produce hollow and cylindrical components where it is more economical to use a hollow section rather than bore out solid stainless steel bar. Choosing hollow bar can reduce machining time, minimise material waste and improve overall cost efficiency for many turned parts.

Overview
This product bar is typically selected when improved corrosion resistance is required, particularly in environments where chloride exposure can increase the risk of pitting. The molybdenum content in 316L supports stronger corrosion performance than 304/304L in many demanding conditions. For components that require a bore, hollow bar provides a practical starting point that can reduce the amount of material removed during machining.

Key benefits

  • Efficient alternative to solid bar for bored components
  • Reduces machining requirements and material waste
  • Improved corrosion and pitting resistance compared to 304/304L
  • Suitable for demanding environments, including chemical and marine exposure

Machining and fabrication notes
316L is the low-carbon version of 316 and is commonly preferred where welding may be required, helping reduce the risk of sensitisation in certain welding conditions. It is non-hardenable by heat treatment, but it can be strengthened through cold work. As with other austenitic grades, 316L is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, although it may become slightly magnetic after cold work.

Typical applications
316L / 1.4404 stainless hollow bar is commonly used for sleeves, bushings, collars, rings and other cylindrical components, particularly where corrosion or chemical resistance is required. It is used across sectors, including chemical processing, pharmaceutical, medical, food and beverage, marine and general engineering, depending on the operating environment and finishing requirements.
