316 and 316L Stainless Steel Bar (1.4401 / 1.4404)

Type 316L is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing molybdenum which increases general corrosion resistance, improves resistance to pitting and provides strength at elevated temperatures. Type 316L is non-hardenable by heat treatment and is generally considered to be weldable by common techniques. Type 316L provides excellent formability and fabricability which is typical of the austenitic stainless steels.

Used extensively across all industries including marine, medical, architectural, pharmaceutical, chemical, food, oil & gas, brewing, textile among others.

This is our standard size range. If you do not see the shape, size or grade you require, please contact us as we will be happy to assist you with reaching your requirements.

316 and 316L stainless steel bar are widely specified where improved corrosion performance is required compared to 304/304L. These grades are supplied in multiple forms, including stainless steel round bar, square bar and hex bar, depending on the component design and machining requirements. They offer good strength, excellent formability and strong performance at elevated temperatures, typical of austenitic stainless steels.

Key benefits

  • Improved corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content
  • Increased resistance to pitting in chloride environments
  • Excellent formability and fabricability
  • 316L is typically preferred where welding is required

Welding and fabrication
316L is the low-carbon version of 316 and is commonly selected for welded components because the lower carbon content helps reduce the risk of sensitisation in certain welding conditions. Both 316 and 316L are non-hardenable by heat treatment, but they can be strengthened through cold work. They are generally considered weldable using common techniques, with appropriate procedures and filler selection for the application.

Typical applications
316 / 1.4401 and 316L / 1.4404 stainless steel bar are used extensively across marine, medical, architectural, pharmaceutical, chemical, food, oil and gas, brewing and textile industries. Typical components include fasteners, shafts, fittings, brackets, machined parts and fabricated assemblies where higher corrosion resistance is required.
