S31803 Duplex Stainless Steel Bar

S31803 Duplex Bar is 22% chromium duplex (austenitic/ferritic) steel with moderate to good strength and good general corrosion/stress corrosion/cracking resistance. It resists chloride environments and sulphide stress corrosion and is roughly double the strength of standard austenitic stainless steels. S31803 can be used successfully as an alternative to 300 serious austenitic stainless steel in most applications where higher mechanical strength/lower weight is required. S31803 is readily weldable using many of the standard electric arc welding processes but oxyacetylene welding is not recommended because carbon pickup in the weld metals may occur.

Typical applications: Pumps, valves, flanges, boat shafts, various applications in the oil & gas, chemical, power and brewing industries.

S31803 duplex stainless steel bar (UNS S31803 / EN 1.4462) is a 22% chromium duplex grade with a mixed austenitic/ferritic structure. It is commonly specified where higher strength is required alongside good corrosion performance, particularly in chloride environments where stress corrosion cracking can be a concern.

Overview
Duplex grades such as S31803 are often used as an alternative to 300 series austenitic stainless steels when higher mechanical strength and lower section weight are preferred. In many applications, S31803 duplex bar provides significantly higher strength than standard austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining good general corrosion resistance and good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Key benefits

  • High strength compared to standard austenitic stainless steels
  • Good general corrosion resistance in many industrial environments
  • Improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride conditions
  • Suitable for many marine, chemical and process applications

Corrosion and service performance
S31803 duplex stainless steel is designed to perform well in environments where chloride exposure can accelerate corrosion mechanisms such as pitting and stress corrosion cracking. It is also used in applications where sulphide stress corrosion cracking resistance is required in certain service conditions. Selecting the right grade depends on operating temperature, chloride levels, and the specific process environment.

Welding and fabrication notes
S31803 is generally weldable using many standard electric arc welding processes when appropriate procedures and consumables are used. As with all duplex stainless steels, control of heat input and correct welding procedure selection is important to maintain the intended microstructure and performance. Oxy-acetylene welding is typically not recommended.

Typical applications
S31803 duplex bar is commonly used for pumps, valves, flanges and shafts, as well as components across oil and gas, chemical, power and brewing industries where strength and corrosion resistance are required.
